About the book:
The county boundary changes of 1974 caused a great deal of resentment which is still felt today even after almost half a century. To celebrate the traditional counties' continuing existence (they were never abolished), Terry Ashby tramps the Yorkshire-Westmorland border, following in the footsteps of Lakeland writer William Palmer who walked this ancient line in 1936. On the way he tells of its history, politics and disputes, describes its landscape and wildlife and recounts its folklore and legends, along with his own, sometimes quirky, adventures (and the odd misadventure), amid some of the wildest and loneliest country in England. This is a book for all lovers of the majestic hills and dales of the Pennines and of Yorkshire in particular.

About the Authors:

TERRY ASHBY is a native of the West Riding and a professional Yorkshireman. After studying law he worked in local government until reorganisation led
to a move into private practice and later into the property profession. He is interested in the natural world and has a degree in geological and biological
sciences. At one time a member of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors, he is currently investigating the history of traditional farm
buildings in the Yorkshire Dales. Fascinated by wild and remote places he has travelled widely in Britain, Europe, South America, North and East
Africa, Central Asia and the Russian Far East. He now works as a volunteer on conservation and countryside management programmes in the North
