About this Book:

This book is the story of Dr Ian Conacher who was born in Scotland in 1947. His father became a Colonial Medical Officer in Tanganyika Territory in 1948. Primary and secondary education was in Africa, before he returned to England for further education and to Scotland, to the University of St Andrews. He graduated MB ChB in 1971, and later became an anaesthetist. He worked in the National Health Service as a Consultant Anaesthetist, with a special interest and expertise in thoracic surgery for thirty years in Newcastle upon Tyne.
He obtained a Doctorate in Medicine from Dundee University in 1989, and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh and of the Faculty of Anaesthetists of the Royal College of Surgeons. He retired from clinical practice in 2008, and apart from some work with Medecins sans Frontieres, has since focused on his African roots to unravel the lives of the medical doctors who served with the Africa explorer Dr David Livingstone on the ill-fated Zambezi Expedition of 1858-64. Dr Conacher is married with four children and five grandchildren and continues to live near Newcastle upon Tyne.
