Description
Chris Palmer tells her own story full of honesty and fun of a woman who went for a long walk. She shares her experiences, views and
pleasures along the way, meeting characters whose paths intertwine with hers for a few days or a lifetime. She blends the physical and spiritual journey of her pilgrimage with stories of the past that have made her into the person she is today
Pioneering for a better sense of self, she teaches us all that walking 750 odd kilometres from St Jean Pied de Port in France over the Pyrenees to Santiago de Compostela in northern Spain may be tough but is the ultimate detox for mind and body.
REVIEWS
“I initially thought that this would be another simple weight-loss story. Instead, I read a wonderful account of how one woman found herself through walking an old pilgrimage path. Christine Palmer does a great job keeping the reader interested the whole way, as well as detailing her struggles and joys, and letting us in on a few secrets.”James Hochman
I laughed out loud at this book, I walked with her in every page, I slowed down my reading at the end as I didn’t want it to finish, I waited a couple of months and read it again…such a heart warming story of real life. Bravo!” Helene
“This book is like a nice Pinot Grigio — not for kids, but light and feels like a treat at the end of the day. It grows on you — starts off a bit disappointing when you read that the author planned the trek largely to lose weight. But then she becomes a charming narrator, weaving in stories and memories just like daydreams that occur when you run or walk. And I especially liked the references and reminiscences to things that seem utterly British —some of which I had to Google, like a liberty bodice (which sounds cozy), or mashed peas (which sound awful). Definitely makes me want to consider treks, although nothing like the Camino De Santiago.” Elizabeth Schlatter
THE AUTHOR
Christine Palmer was born in Derbyshire an ‘enfant terrible’ of the sixties. She worked in Canada and America returning to England she juggled several jobs, a family, university and then joined the BBC in which she describes as a ‘rags to riches’ career starting in Local Radio. In the 1980s she moved over to television as a studio director at ‘Pebble Mill’, a documentary film maker, and finally to London as an Executive TV Producer. She has worked in many different parts of the world with a secondment to South Africa Broadcasting. She was awarded a Royal Television Award for a documentary she and her team made in Mumbai. Her final years at the BBC were as a Commissioner and Creative Director at Television Centre.
After taking early retirement she and her husband moved to France, where they set up a small holiday business, tea-room and art gallery. She also developed a passion for walking, starting with the 750km walk from St Jean Pied de Port to Santiago Compostela, this resulted in her writing her first book ‘Walking Back to Happiness’ to be followed by three illustrated children’s book and her first novel ‘Jack be Nimble’. She continues to walk the medieval routes around Europe and with her husband visits England regularly, where they have a canal boat in the East End of London.
